Solutions to bed wetting problems

Bedwetting is a very common problem for children under the age of six, and if it’s left untreated it can last well into the preteen years. Although it’s a part of a child’s natural development, it can be extremely stressful for the child concerned, and parents often feel helpless. So what can you do to help?

Provide emotional support

The most important thing for your child is to know that you are there to support and reassure him until the bedwetting phase has finished. Reassure your child that it’s a normal part of growing up and that it won’t last forever.

Provide practical support

  • Remind your child to go to the toilet just before bedtime, and be there with clean sheets if an accident happens during the night.
  • When to talk with your child's doctor
  • If the bedwetting began abruptly and was accompanied by other symptoms it could indicate another medical issue, so make an appointment to see your doctor together. The doctor may check for signs of a urinary tract infection, constipation, bladder problems, diabetes, or severe stress.
