Variety is the Key
As solid food becomes an increasing part of your baby’s diet, introduce some variety. Not only will they get all the essential nutrients, they will be experiencing new tastes, flavours and textures. The more varied the diet is, the less likely they are to become a fussy eater.
Try to ensure you give your baby foods from each of the 4 main food groups:
- Bread and other cereals.
- Fruit and vegetables
- Milk and dairy products (including baby’s usual milk)
- Meat and meat alternatives
Never leave your child alone when he/she is eating or drinking, in case they get into difficulties and start choking and never add solids to your baby’s bottle.
Weaning should be a slow and steady process, and although introducing new tastes and flavours is important, certain foods are unsuitable (see Foods to Avoid). This is particularly relevant if there is a family history of allergies, including asthma, eczema and hayfever. Consult your doctor or health visitor for advice.
